THE LAND

​The protected bay of Old Bank has for centuries been among the safest harbors in all of Bocas del Toro, with a deep water basin right in front of Luminescence Farm allowing for construction of docks to berth even the largest of private boats for year round safe access. The farms dock is a twelve minute boat ride to Colon Island where the airport is located.

On the protected bay side (also the side that faces town) the farm was once a largely deforested cow pasture and it has been reforested with orchards of selected fruit trees, hardwoods, palms, vines, flowers, and countless native species.

The low land swamp has been expertly transformed into seven productive levels of interconnected canals and raised islands. These canals or Chinampas function like a winding river and are spanned by bridges and shaded by high value grafted fruit trees. The system of interconnected canals and ponds are dotted with meandering islands that cover the front four acres of the farm and are planted with some of the most exotic specimens.

Above the canals the fruit forest continues in a series of rolling hills and ridges that lead up to the main ridge that runs along the top of the island. In addition to the two most obvious hills there are numerous building sites, any of which could be legally separated and sold with individual TITLES. The gardens are planted as a seamless fruit forest, a mixed tableau where every twist in the path encounters a new tree in fruit, a new flavor to experience.

Luminescence farm is incredibly productive and diverse, yet has maintained important view corridors and left key areas open to custom plant species desirable to new owners. The diversity and productivity of the farm has attracted wildlife back to the area including the top mammal on the island – the White Throated Capuchin monkey – and even caiman in the ponds and canals.

The sea side of the farm is concentrated with native species, hardwoods, palms and bamboo as it meanders down to Wizard Beach, one of the most secluded and beautiful stretches of beach in the archipelago. Through years of planting and selection the farm not only looks like the Garden of Eden but it produces large amounts of sustainable wood and fruit and has now become the de facto nature reserve on our side of the island.
